Should new technological achievements and modes of production first serve their own needs, or should they address planetary problems?
What kind of environmental justice should we pursue? If injustice is an inevitable result of class differentiation between wealth and poverty, is environmental justice merely an empty formal gesture of pity?
The work uses conventional chemical-industrial materials to create a simulated model of a pair of praying hands. The form, texture, and details of the hands are derived from workers engaged in highly polluting forms of production, and pollutants from traditional chemical industries are incorporated into the material of the hand model.
The upper container is made as a refined glass vessel resembling those often used in beauty products, with a carefully designed shape and texture. Sodium surfactin from the fermentation tank is injected into the central glass container and slowly drips onto the model of the hands.
As a lipopeptide surfactant, surfactin can adsorb pollutants. However, it can only adsorb pollutants located on the surface of the hand model, not those embedded within it. This process of purification therefore becomes a difficult and ultimately futile labor.
